The fact that the ATLA writers were originally making the Southern Raiders episode “too shippy” for Bryke and Bryke had to constantly tell them to make it more and more toxic to prevent any sort of shipping moments makes me almost as happy as the fact that Bryke’s attempts still backfired

This actually happened? Imagine the beautiful possibilities we would have gotten in that episode if it weren’t for Bryke….

yes but considering what happened, we did see exactly how bad Aang is at emotional support and how well Zuko handled himself in it, so that’s a plus

Aaron said that Bryke had revised what Elizabeth had written many times for the episode so the Zuko/Katara ship would look bad. The episode director was a Kataang shipper and did the same. If you want further proof just listen to their DVD commentary for the episode. They imply that Zuko was Katara’s “devil” to Aang’s “angel”; they outright state that Aang’s philosophy is what compelled Katara to spare Yon Rha’s life, rather than Katara relying on her own morals, and this was “proof” that Aang was better for her than Zuko. The subtle complexity of Elizabeth Ehasz’s writing was interpreted into a childish dichotomy of “good ship vs. evil ship” by Bryke. It was first and foremost an episode about Katara’s own choices, but they turn it into her fretting over what Aang would think.

forget anything that has jack shit to do with shipping for a moment.  that’s just so belittling to Katara’s character honestly.
